Rapunzel’s Tale – Mountain Adventures between Lauenensee and Wispile
My gaze drifts over the village of Saanen toward the Rüeblihorn, the distinctive peak dominating my view. The vista from my bed is so splendid that I don’t even need to rise or sit on the balcony. It’s a sight we’ve longed for—after our journey from Zurich, the evening atmosphere feels especially magical. It has truly been too long since we’ve been back in the Bernese Oberland. It feels like coming home: the landscape is familiar, the mountain tops well known. Although I grew up in the lowlands, not in the mountains, I’ve spent much time here—whether with my grandparents or snowboarding in winter.

E-Bike Tour to Lauenen lake
The next morning, we set off for the very reason we came here: Lauenensee. I had long wanted to see the much-celebrated mountain lake with my own eyes.
In Saanen, we rent two e-bikes with trailers for the kids. It’s just over 27 km to Lauenensee, and the route climbs steeply, so we’re grateful for the extra push, especially with the children in the trailers. The tour is super idyllic, especially once we leave Gstaad and really start climbing the mountain and getting into the pedals. The timing of our trip to the Saanenland is perfect. It’s a warm summer weekend, flowers bloom in every imaginable color, and the landscape is lush.
We ride on side roads and are almost alone on the way. Only for a short stretch do we ride along the main road before returning to smaller paths. In the village of Lauenen, we take a break and admire the beautiful facades of the famous chalets.
The last stretch to Lauenensee drags on. I keep expecting to see it just around the next corner, but then there’s another climb. Waterfalls thunder down into the valley, and the scenery is beautiful—a real natural paradise, even more beautiful than I had imagined.
Circular Trail around Lauenensee
When we finally arrive at the lake, I can hardly take my eyes off it. The small and large Lauenen lake lie within a nature reserve with moor meadows, a paradise for waterfowl. The trail around the lake is only 3 km long and easy to walk, even with a stroller. Depending on where you are, the view of the Lauenensee changes constantly. The most beautiful sights are at the two waterfalls, Geltenschuss and Tungelschuss—truly paradisiacal.
We can’t resist jumping into the water to cool off in the warm temperatures. Afterwards, we eat on the terrace of the Lauenensee restaurant, enjoying a cheese platter, rösti, and the kids have their obligatory pasta, all with the best view of the lake.
