Georg Friedrich Händel is one of the outstanding and most significant figures in music history. His artistic ambition, creative power and sensitivity, his openness to the world, education, and tolerance made him a true European during his lifetime.
The public loved Handel's operas and oratorios. His oratorio "Messiah" (Der Messias), which he wrote in just 23 days, is considered one of the most important works of this genre and made Handel world-famous. The "Messiah" premiered over a quarter of a millennium ago, namely in 1742 in Dublin. The best-known critics praised the oratorio immediately after the performance as the "most perfect work of music".
