When the first tourists arrived in Gstaad in 1905 with the newly built railway line, it marked the beginning of a remarkable transformation from a farming village to a world resort. In the following years, numerous hotels were established, including the world-famous Palace Hotel as well as half a dozen boarding schools. Thus, the world came to Gstaad. Like hardly any other tourist region, Gstaad has managed to balance openness to the world and authenticity while remaining true to itself and its architectural style. The stories of the past illustrate the development of this unique village, and the images convey the spirit of its inhabitants, who have always believed in the potential of their village.
