Lake Sanetsch

The perfect spot for a bracing dip

The Sanetschsee lies at an altitude of 2,034 m in a breathtaking high alpine valley north of the Sanetsch Pass. A hike around the dammed mountain lake takes 1.5 hours. Brave swimmers can cool off with a dip in the chilly water, or simply cool their feet. Nearby is the tiny village of Sanetsch, with a chapel, museum, inn and climbing area. The lake is easy to reach via the Sanetschbahn cable car from the Bern side, or via the post bus from Sion – an ideal starting point for hikes like Glacier3000–Sanetsch. A thrilling high alpine experience for outdoor enthusiasts in the Bernese Oberland!

Lake Retaud

Set in a hollow and surrounded by alpine pastures and fir trees, it makes a lovely spot to swim, picnic and relax. Restaurant Lac Retaud provides welcome fortification, with regional specialities. The lake can be reached in 30 minutes from the Col du Pillon or along a track from the Diablerets-Isenau mountain station. Families and day-trippers love this quiet retreat with a spectacular backdrop of glaciers and mountains.

Saane

The region’s great river

The Saane rises high up on the Sanetsch and flows down the valley to Saanen. Its name comes from the Celtic ‘Seganona’, meaning ‘goddess of the waters’. In the holiday destination of Gstaad, idyllic hiking and walking trails lead through beautiful scenery along the entire course of the river. The family barbecue area in Feutersoey between Gstaad and Gsteig is particularly stunning and makes a wonderful place to relax amid meadows and forests. From here you can enjoy leisurely walks upstream towards Gsteig or downstream to Gstaad. With its turquoise water, the Saane is one of the defining images of the region and the starting point for unforgettable experiences in the great outdoors.

Where rivers meet

The confluence of the Grosse and Kleine Simme

The Grosse Simmer and Kleine Simme rivers come together near the village of Zweisimmen – hence its name (‘Two Simmes’). Families can enjoy the covered barbecue area beside the Kleine Simme, above the village near Mühleport. Children can play and build little dams along the little stream next to the river. The barbecue area is easily accessible on foot from Zweisimmen railway station. The beautiful walking trails along the banks of the two rivers are also ideal for a stroll. The two Simme rivers define Zweisimmen and make a wonderful place to relax just beyond the village.

Chalberhönibach

Peace and quiet off the beaten track

The Chalberhönibach flows through a quiet side valley off the tourist trail. Just 200 m from the Waldmatte restaurant, you’ll come across a lovely barbecue area on the bank of the stream, built by schoolchildren after a flood. A walk upstream leads through pristine natural scenery to beautiful stretches of the stream, and, after 3.5 km, to the source at Gumseeli. The valley can be reached by car via Saanen. Hike alongside the babbling mountain stream, past lush meadows and steep rock faces. It’s a hidden gem for those seeking peace and quiet!

Lauibach

The wild beauty of the moorland

The Lauibach flows through a wild and beautiful expanse of moorland between the village of Lauenen and Lake Lauenen. An enchanting hiking trail leads along the cool mountain stream, with all manner of flora and fauna along the way. The ever-widening zigzag path leads directly to the picturesque Lake Lauenen, passing through stunning natural scenery. The trail starts at the Hotel Alpenland in Lauenen. It also provides access to longer hikes to the Geltenschuss or the Geltenhütte. All in all, it’s a wonderful experience for nature lovers in the Bernese Oberland.

Turbach-Bach

Along a creek in the ruggedly beautiful Heubergtal

The Turbach creek rises in the wild and spectacular Heubergtal and flows towards Gstaad. Quiet hiking trails punctuated by well-equipped barbecue areas lead along the babbling mountain stream, far away from traffic and the stress of everyday life. You can truly immerse yourself in untrammelled nature in the remote Heubergtal. After all that exertion, the cool stream entices you to take a refreshing dip. The rustic Wintermatte inn deep within the valley serves hearty meals. Hiking into the Heuberg area or following the rushing Turbach creek to Gstaad makes a welcome break from the daily grind. It’s another little-known yet rewarding spot for those seeking peace and quiet in our lovely Gstaad holiday region.

Rischbachquelle spring

Water in abundance

The Rischbachquelle spring rises in a moorland landscape above Zweisimmen – a rich habitat for animals and plants. The steep climb to the barbecue area is rewarded with the view of Zweisimmen. It’s a wonderful place to take some time out. Fresh spring water bubbles directly from the mountainside. The Rischbachquelle is just a 15-minute walk from the railway station, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the beauty of the Zweisimmen area.

Tungelschuss & Geltenschuss

Roaring waterfalls by Lake Lauenen

The Tungelschuss is located right beside Lake Lauenen, just 400 m from the car park. From the lake, you have a spectacular view of the waterfall, which collects the waters from the Stieretungel and Chuetungel mountains and hurtles down the rocks to the Lauibach.

Further into the valley, 2 km south of Lake Lauenen, masses of water plummet down the 180-metre-high Geltenschuss. One section of the hike to the Geltenhütte takes you behind the water wall of the Geltenschuss. No one stays dry! It’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. Colourful flower meadows surround the Geltenschuss – an utterly instagrammable backdrop!
