Marc von Felten from the Zweisimmen district of Blankenburg is helping out with the Burg Mannenberg Foundation’s Burgenweg (Castle Trail) project. It has set itself the objective of breathing new life into the largest double castle complex in the Bernese Oberland and maintaining the region’s medieval cultural artefacts.
‘In addition to the church, which dates back to about 1000 AD, the historic parish in Zweisimmen also includes the charnel house from the year 1481. Nowadays, it serves as a meeting place. From Kirchgasse, you pass the charnel house and continue to the centre of the parish. You cannot escape from the almost medieval atmosphere which prevails here. Your spirit will be whisked away to ancient times. From the upper section of the church complex, you can enjoy sweeping views over the rooves far into the Simmental valley, and in the distance you will recognise the hill on which the huge Mannenberg Castle once stood.’
