Portrait of the Simmental cow
Most of the farmers in the Saanenland region and the Simmental valley raise Simmental, a breed they are particularly proud of. Special breed associations and cattle breeding cooperatives ensure that it is preserved, nurtured and promoted.
Origin and use of the breed
The Simmental originates from the neighbouring Simmental valley. Ten cattle-breeding co-operatives founded the "Swiss Simmental Association" in 1890. Today the Simmental is one of the most widespread cattle breeds in the world, with over 40 million head. Beef producers on all five continents have been very successful rearing Simmental cattle. In Switzerland the Simmental is breed mainly for its milk.
