Gstaad's car-free promenade set new standards in 1996. A road bypass and a tunnel were built so that guests and visitors could enjoy an attractive shopping and strolling avenue in the centre of the town. For this successful project Gstaad was subsequently awarded the Milestone Tourism Prize of Switzerland, the industry's most prestigious award.
