Tomb of Coudenhove-Kalergi

This monument is the public tomb of the Austrian diplomat Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi. He was also the founder of the Paneuropa-Organisation, which holds its meetings in Gstaad every few years. The objective was to create a united Europe after the First World War and to avert the danger of war. The foundation of this pan-European organisation occurred to a large extent in the municipality of Saanen, giving the place special importance. However, the movement did not go on to achieve the desired level of political success, but it does still exist today.

The site was formed by Japanese stone artists according to their rituals. The Japanese connection goes back to the wife of R. Coudenhove-Kalergi. The opening was also reported in the local press at the time, and a trilingual plaque at the entrance to the memorial site provides background information. The property belongs to the municipality of Saanen. More information is available there.
